From the South
Idaho City is approximately a
one-hour drive from the Boise
airport. Once you reach Idaho City, you’ll find our campground
eight miles from the downtown area. For most visitors, the simplest way
to get here is by taking ID route
21, the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway. This route is paved until the last
eight miles, and dirt for most of the remainder. All dirt road sections
are well-maintained by Boise County . Roads
may at times be wash-boarded, but are passable by passenger vehicles.
Note the use of four wheel drive and/or chains is advised in winter,
when roads may be slippery.
NOTE though GPS maps may suggest it, most locals avoid the lower section of Grimes Pass Road, bypassing the road’s first entry point further south along ID 21. That section of road is bumpier than the rest. You may also refer to the map on our website for additional information.
From the North
Travelers from the North might be
closer to ID route 55. For a longer section of dirt road adventure, you
can cut up this way through Horseshoe Bend. Along this route, Harris
Creek Rd. is not fully maintained in winter, so skip this route in the
snowy season!
